A few hours later, darkness clung to the beginnings of the rising sun, not ready for a new day to begin. I stroked my hands up and down Lexi’s skin and watched as she slowly came awake. She smiled and I kissed her lips.

“I have to go soon.”

She pouted and it tugged at what was left of my heart strings. “Stay here with me,” she whispered against my lips.

I palmed the side of her face. “I have to meet Dean.” Rolling on top of her, I kissed her again, deeper this time. “But first, there is something I need to do.”

I got up on my knees and she locked her legs around my waist. I skimmed over her nipples and the base of her neck. Her eyes rolled close in anticipation. Slowly, I wrapped my fingers around her neck and squeezed. Her eyes popped open and she knew.

“I’m sorry, Lexi. You know too much.”

Lexi was the only other person outside of Dean who knew I had something to do with Smitty’s murder. Dean and I had agreed. It was too risky to keep her alive. Lexi bucked and kicked and scratched but it was no use. I had her pinned down on the bed. The next time she would leave this house it would be in a body bag.

“Chris,” she pleaded weakly.

I laughed hollowly and a single tear left my eye. “Chris is gone, baby. He died the moment life left Smitty’s body.”

I felt her bones snap beneath my fingertips and the fight leave her body. Picking her up, I carried her corpse to the deep freezer in the garage. Walking towards my car, I got in and drove off just as the sun began to rise. It was a new day.

Thirty minutes later I pulled up to an abandon warehouse outside of Chicago. I met Dean at the top floor. He was there by himself and a smile was on his face. “My brother! Did you take care of that little bitch?” I nodded. “Good, good. Now, I have a plan on how to take down Bruce McKnight. See, I don’t want to kill him. I want to make him suffer. He’s been around town trying to embarrass me. I can’t have that shit. So, I’m going to take the one person who means the most to him: Belinda. That’s where you come in, Ice.”

“What are you talking about, Dean? You said I was going to be a major player on the team.”

He slapped me on the back while he lit a cigarette. I leaned against a wall and waited for him to explain himself. “You are. In fact, you are going to be a very integral part of my operation. You are going to be my mercenary. See, you get to stay in the shadows. That’s some real super spy shit right there! And it all starts with Belinda. Now, I’ve got your cover all figured out. You’ll be working at this strip club I just bought for the ladies.
